Confirmation Preparation Resources

Confirmation is one of the sacraments of initiation, along with Baptism and Eucharist. Baptism is the sacrament of rebirth to a new and supernatural life, while confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age. It is conferred by the anointing of Chrism oil and the laying on of hands by the Bishop. The Sacrament of Confirmation draws us into a greater awareness of the Holy Spirit, which we received at Baptism. Through Baptism, our parents make promises for us as we join God’s family. At Confirmation, we are old enough to make our own decisions, and we confirm our faith in our Lord.

The Catechetics Council of the Irish Bishops Conference have produced a series of resources which would be very useful in the preparation of children for the Sacrament of Confirmation. They consist of three movie episodes (30mins each).

Episode 1:      The Holy Spirit in our Lives
The first episode focuses on the Holy Spirit and the difference it makes in our lives.

Episode 2:      The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Episode 3:      Celebrating Confirmation
The final episode looks at choosing Confirmation names and sponsors and the Confirmation ceremony itself.

These series of resources could be used by parents, schools or parishes in preparing children for Confirmation and could form the foundation for a short refresher programme for P7 children who will be making their Confirmation over the next few weeks.
