Wonder of My Being RSE Programme
‘Wonder of My Being’ RSE Primary School Programme (2010)
The Relationships and Sexuality Programme, ‘The Wonder of My Being’ created by the Diocese of Down and Connor and launched in September 2010 across the Diocese was drawn up in response to requests from primary schools to meet some of the requirements of the Revised NI Primary Curriculum Key Stages 1 and 2, in particular in the area of Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PD&MU). The materials are intended as guidance for teachers in Catholic schools, and each school should interpret them in accordance with its ethos.
Summary of the Programme
| Year 1 – I am Special | These series of lessons emphasise that each child is different and special in the eyes of God and within their own family. |
| Year 2 – My Family Cares for Me | The children explore how they have changed since they were babies. They will also become aware of the care that their families provide. |
| Year 3 – I Care for Others | The children will begin to realise their ability to care for others as they mature. This is linked to the role of the child Jesus within his family. |
| Year 4 – Motherhood | The children will begin to appreciate the role of Mary as the mother of Jesus. They will also be helped to appreciate their own mothers. These lessons introduce the children to words associated with pregnancy and birth. |
| Year 5 – Each Person is Unique and Important in God’s Family | The children will appreciate that each person has been created by God and is unique. The stages of development between birth and ten years will be discussed and the part the family plays in this development. |
| Year 6 – Created in God’s Image and Likeness – The Wonder of My Being | The children will recognise that they have been created in the image and likeness of God. They will also discuss the importance of showing respect for themselves and others as they grow and change. |
| Year 7 – I’m Special, You’re Special | The children will appreciate that everyone has been called by God and that they all have talents which should be used in a positive way. |
