Parish Groups / Volunteers

Parish staff and volunteers who work closely with children and young people must attend a two hour Parish Information Session which includes the following information:

  • Understanding what we mean by child abuse (definition of child abuse)
  • Roles and responsibilities of staff and volunteers regarding children and young people
  • Recognition of child abuse (signs and indicators of abuse)
  • How to respond to and how to report concerns, suspicions or disclosures/ allegations of child abuse
  • Role of the Diocesan Designated Officer
  • The seven standards of best practice as set out in the National Board for Safeguarding Children – Standards and Guidance document for the Catholic Church in Ireland, 2009
  • Best practice in parish activities relating to safeguarding children and young people


Parish clergy, staff and volunteers  may also attend the Recording Information Workshop which includes information on how to record an incident/ allegation of child abuse, what should be recorded and with whom the information should be shared. (This is optional)
