Chosen – Custody of the Eyes (Film)
Jul 1 @ 4:00 pm

Sunday 1st July, 4.00pm

Tickets £6

Chosen (Custody of the Eyes) is a coming-of-age cinéma vérité film about a young woman — a former blogger and painter — becoming a cloistered contemplative nun in the United States. This 107-minute documentary, directed by Abbie Reese, is set in the Corpus Christi Monastery just west of Chicago.

Poor Clare Colettine nuns make vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and enclosure; they also seek anonymity and observe silence. Abbie was granted rare and continued access, since 2005, to conduct oral history interviews, make photographs, and record video footage within the cloistered monastery.

In 2005, Abbie arranged to meet Heather*, who was considering a calling to religious life. Abbie interviewed Heather for the next six years, before Heather joined the monastery in 2011, at the age of 25. Like early cinema vérité works (by Jean Rouch), Abbie lent the primary subject a camera to document her own vantage point and interior journey into this religious order founded in 1212. Heather became a collaborator and the film’s cinematographer.

Abbie is author of Dedicated to God: An Oral History of Cloistered Nuns (Oxford University Press, 2014). She has an MFA in visual arts from the University of Chicago.

*Heather is an alias she chose to reflect the Poor Clare pursuit of hiddenness — fulfilling their mission to withdraw from the world to pray for humanity
