Ash Wednesday at Queen’s University, Belfast
It was great to see so many students and staff coming to the Catholic Chaplaincy QUB for the celebration of Mass and the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. Fr Joseph Mary Deane from the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal preached at all the Ash Wednesday Masses, and Bishop Noel Treanor, the Bishop of Down and Connor, came to celebrate the 6.15pm Mass, taking time to meet students and visitors afterwards.
In a bid to reach out to students and hand on the faith quite literally, distribution of the YouCat (Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church) took place after each of the five Masses and indeed throughout the day. A team of student volunteers provided assistance as copies were put into the hands of every person who visited the Chaplaincy.
The response to this evangelisation venture has been terrific! Youcat was enthusiastically received by students and visitors alike, and many members of the congregation also picked up an extra copy to give to a friend as a Lenten gift. And the Chaplaincy hopes to form YouCat cells for the ongoing study of this invaluable faith tool.
Youcat offers a great opportunity to engage with a questioning faith and is an excellent resource for those who are searching for a deeper understanding of faith, practice and Church teaching. Already, feedback from many of those who were gifted a copy indicated that this key tool of formation and evangelisation became their new bedtime reading!
