Ordination to the Diaconate

Deacon Tony McAleese

The Church celebrates the ordination of five men to the Diaconate.   The word ‘deacon’ means ‘one who serves’.   Jesus tells us: “I have not come to be served but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10:45).   The Lord is the diakonos, the servant of all.

When a man is ordained Deacon, he enters upon the last stage in his preparation for the Priesthood.   The office of the Deacon however, is far more than just another milestone on the road to Priesthood.   Deacons are called to do the will of God generously and to serve Him and others in love and joy.
