‘Women in Scripture’ with Pamela Thimmes OSC PhD

Day One     Saturday, 20 October (9:30 am – 4:30 pm)

Day Two     Sunday, 11 November (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm)

Day Three     Sunday, 27 January 2013 (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm)

One of the questions you might to bring to this course is  “Why look specifically at women in the Bible?”  Others of you might respond, “It’s about time!”  Throughout history the weight of Biblical scholarship and preaching has been concerned with the men in the Bible:  their actions, characterisation, authority, public positions, faith, etc.  In fact, one can honestly say that the Bible is a group of documents written by men, primarily for men – it presumes a “male world.”

But from the 1940s onwards, biblical interpretation began to change in profound ways.  In this course, we will survey a number of biblical texts/stories from both testaments.  Dr David Barr teaches that there are three worlds operating at the same time in any given text:

-         The world behind the text

-         The world within the text

-         The world in front of the text

The course will explore these worlds, exploring what a given text might have meant and what it might mean.  The course costs £50 (including lunch and refreshments on the first day and refreshments on the second and third) About the speaker:  Pam is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies, University of Dayton, Ohio, USA.  She is a member of the Poor Clare Community in Faughart, County Louth.

Further information about the course is available from the Drumalis website, www.drumalis.co.uk    Alternatively please contact the centre directly during office hours (Mon – Fri, 9 am – 5 pm), telephone 028 2827 2196 / 2827 6455
